Understanding and Addressing Sexual Abuse in Ayahuasca Settings: A Look at Recent Research
In recent years, the psychedelic community has been increasingly concerned with the issue of sexual abuse within ayahuasca settings. One organization at the forefront of this discussion is Chacruna, a group dedicated to providing public education about plant medicines and psychedelics. They have conducted groundbreaking research to better understand and mitigate the issue of sexual abuse in these settings.
In 2020, Chacruna launched the Ayahuasca Survey, seeking to understand whether their Ayahuasca Community Guide for the Awareness of Sexual Abuse had an effect on individuals' understandings of how sexual abuse can occur in ayahuasca settings. The survey aimed to assess the extent of sexual abuse within the ayahuasca community, as well as the impact of the guidelines on the respondents.
The Ayahuasca Community Guide, available in 14 languages since 2018, is a freely downloadable resource offering a comprehensive perspective on the potential risks and considerations associated with ayahuasca use, including potential sexual abuse. Chacruna also offers a Legal Resources Companion to the guidelines, providing country-specific information on laws and policies regarding sexual abuse.
The survey garnered 2,071 respondents, with 745 cases included in the final analysis. A majority of respondents (83.1%) were aware that sexual abuse can and does occur in ayahuasca settings. Over half (52.1%) reported some direct or indirect experience with sexual abuse in these settings, such as hearing about it happening to others or knowing someone it had happened to.
The survey results also indicated that the guidelines are having a positive impact. Most respondents found the guidelines useful for understanding the risks of sexual abuse (60.4% definitely; 33.4% probably), with 32.8% reporting that the guidelines changed their behavior. This change in behavior is a significant achievement, showing that raising awareness and providing resources can effect meaningful change in the community.
Furthermore, the respondents provided personal comments on how the guidelines influenced their behaviors. Themes included increased awareness and caution, willingness to discuss the issue more openly, and a focus on seeking reputable shamans or healers. There was also an emphasis on setting boundaries and maintaining a safe space during ayahuasca sessions.
While these findings are significant, it's important to note that this is just one study, and more research is needed to fully understand the extent of this issue and how best to address it. Other studies on this topic include the Global Ayahuasca Project, the MAPS-sponsored Ayahuasca Safety Guide, and the Sexual Assault in the Ayahuasca Community survey, which all echo the importance of awareness, education, and community involvement in addressing this issue.
